Week 44

A post-Kona week email wouldn’t be over without including a Breakfast with Bob recap - and here it is! Patrick Lange, newly-minted 3x IRONMAN World Champion catches up with Bob Babbitt and chats about how his day went - and how he got himself to one of the most challenging finish lines of his life.

In this week’s email:

  • Longest Cycling Tunnel: Fyllingsdaltunellen (the Fyllingsdal tunnel) is a 2900 meter long tunnel through Løvstakken for pedestrians and cyclists between Fyllingsdalen and Minde in Bergen, Norway. The tunnel opened in spring 2023 and is the world's longest cycling tunnel.

  • Strava Must-Follows: Follow some professional triathletes to round out your Strava newsfeed - and humble your own personal feed of events

  • Age Grouper Stories from Kona: If you watched the live feed from IM WC, you might be left wondering - what about the other 2000+ participants that make this a World Champ event? Read about some of them HERE.

👇Listen to a Cadence-recommended Pod: The Pro Tri News podcast debriefs IM World Championships this past weekend - after months of trash-talking from athletes, speculation on message boards and alll the hot takes from anyone that follows the sport - Patrick Lange took the podium (again). If you don’t have time to watch the full race, this is a great recap of what went down out there…and if you like this pod, follow the crew that produces it here (self-proclaimed WAGs of Tri) & watch them cover bike check-in below…

Tidbits

Tech in Tri: Super shoes, super bikes, 3D printed aero bars - elite triathletes are looking for ANYTHING that will give them an edge up on the competition. What new tech graced the Big Island this past weekend? Check it out below.

Professional Yakker: Kristian Blummenfelt is no doubt an incredible athlete - but Kona has a tendency to chew up & eat it’s own. Blummenfelt is probably going to have to weather a few more months of puking jokes and memes after he yakked on the bike - more than (supposedly) a dozen times. Nonetheless - Kristian gutted his way out to a 36th place finish. In a sea of DNFs when the going gets tough, he got it done on a HOT day when things were not going his way.

Make Once, Eat 4x: We basically live at the grocery store, which means we DEFINITELY don’t have it together enough to meal prep. This salad recipe is a lazy one for us meal prepper wanna-bes - make a big bowl of it tonight & eat it for the next couple of meals, yum.

TRI DIY: The Queen K is a relentless road through the lava fields - high winds and high temps. When you pop a tire, there’s not exactly a LBS within walking distance. Sometimes, you gotta do what you gotta do to get home.

Couch to 26.2: We never recommend running a marathon on little (or obviously…no) training, but it’s definitely fun to watch someone suffer through such a stupid, but wild, feat. Catch the sufferfest HERE.

Performance Of The Week(end): Billy Monger with the new para athlete IM record -14:23:56
