Week 45

What are the economics of a major marathon? Surely if youā€™ve been a part of ANY endurance racing scene, youā€™ve done the mental math, and itā€™s gone a bit likeā€¦

ā€œIf I paid $350 to do this marathon, and thereā€™s 50,000 runnersā€¦$17.5 million in revenue and all I got was a shirt, medal and a measly banana at the finish line - surely thereā€™s a lot left over.ā€

BUT, if youā€™re on the other side of endurance events - planning and operating these iconic events, you know a lot more goes into the event then just a few medals and a police officer or two.

Soā€¦HOW do these events make money? Watch the video above.

šŸ‘‡Listen to a Cadence-recommended Pod: We still arenā€™t over Kona WC - and after listening this pod with The Lance Armstrong, Craig Alexander, Jimmy Riccitello, discussing how it went down, what it takes to win, weā€™re already hype for 2025!

Tidbits

Influencers in the (running) Wild: Every year, at the Marathon Majors, thereā€™s a few featured, VIP runners that take to the course (read: celebrities, and the occasional Bachelor Nation contestant/lead). However, in the ever-growing world of influencers, thereā€™s now DOZENS that partake in these events - even going as far as Matt Choi, who secured media credentials to have an ebike follow him on the course. Fellow runners are (rightfully) pissed; the biker ran into other athletes, impeded them from reaching aid stations, and was generally unsafe. See it HERE.

āœ…Swan Song for the GOAT: Jenny Simpson is one of the GOATs (Greatest Of All Time) when it comes to mid-distance running. 12x U.S Champion, Diamond League Champ, 6 NCAA records (in 6 events) - and now, 3x marathoner, finished off her professional career with an 18th place finish at the NYC Marathon. Absolutely amazing.

āœ…Insta-worthy Hike: This hike in Fronalpstock, Switzerland has all the trappings of a beautiful, iconic hike - cable car to the top, mountain views, green meadows straight from Sound of Music, and (usually) blue bird weather. Add this to your itinerary next time you jump across The Pond.

āœ…The 7th Wonder of Marathon Majors: Itā€™s not every day that ā€˜theyā€™ add another marathon to the Abbott World Marathon Majors line-up. We know that the Sydney Marathon has been pulling for this for a while - but itā€™s FINALLY official, come 2025. Sydney Marathon has LITERALLY joined the Big Leagues, bravo.

āœ…Take our Money $$: With more bikes in our garage than people living in our house - we donā€™t really NEED another one, but twist our arm a bit - we do NEED this specific bike. Special edition paint job, top of the line components - Trek has really outdone themselves again.
