Week 50

“Having originally been due to stage the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in 2020, the pandemic forced a delay for the eager host town of Taupo that ultimately extended to four years.

It should be worth the wait. The big weekend of racing is around the corner, a stellar cast of more than 110 female and male pros will line up with around 6,000 age-groupers in one of the biggest multisport festivals New Zealand’s North Island has seen..

With a share of the $500k prize purse on offer as well as being the final event in the Ironman Pro Series, there is plenty to play for in what should be a thrilling climax to the year.” - Tim Heming via 220 Triathlon

In this week’s email:

  • NCAA Record Alert: Graham Blanks for 12:59 5K Indoor Record & Doris Lemngole for 14:52 Women’s Record.

  • Amazon Find: Windproof cycling pants for those fat tire rides or snowy hikes.

  • RIP St. George: 2025 will be the LAST year that you can race in of the more iconic IM locations - read more HERE.

👇Listen to a Cadence-recommended Audiobook: Long rides on the indoor trainer warrant having a laundry list of things to keep your mind occupied. This audiobook is a great memoir following the GOAT of running shoes (NOT tennis shoes) - Phil Knight, founder of Nike.

Tidbits

Destination Racing: Sure, 70.3 Muncie is a flat & fast course, but doesn’t a destination race sound more enticing than plain-old Indiana? Australia is a destination that is probably on most bucket lists - but you should really consider adding it to your racing list. Read a recap of IRONMAN Australia here.

Outnumbered: Men outnumber women in IRONMAN events, 4:1. Why is that though? What barriers to entry exist in the sport (and racing) of triathlon? This a great and insightful study that looks at these important topics and offers suggestions on how to increase equity in the sport, both recreationally and in racing environments.

Davis, Virginia: Sure - everyone knows about Boulder and Bentonville as prime endurance sports meccas to live in. Now that the cat is out of the bag, the cost of living in towns like these are through the roof. Enter: Davis, Virginia - low cost of living, and perfect proximity to trails, slopes, rivers & creature comforts (sans a Starbucks). Check it out HERE.

USAT Financials: Every publicly-traded company and non-profit organization are required to submit annual reports/audits that detail how they spend money. Every Team USA affiliated organization falls into that category - including USA Triathlon. The biggest takeaway in this? USAT employees are underpaid for the immense value they deliver to the sport and paying members.

#BossLady Reindeer: Did you know that reindeer are the only species in which both males and females grow antlers? Knowing this info now, we might have been lied to all these years with the “male” reindeer that pull Santa’s sleigh. Male reindeer lose their antlers in winter months, which means Santa’s deliveries are actually made possible by lady reindeers. #Slayyyy.
