week3
Haley Chura is DOPE (for those that arenât hip, dope = cool/awesome/badass). Competing in the Disney World Dopey Challenge is brutal for most runners, but for a long-course professional triathlete like Haley Chura, itâs just another training block. The Dopey Challenge consists of completing a 5K, 10K, 13.1/half marathon, and 26.2/full marathon over 4 days; back to back to back to back. Chucking her tri kit to the wind; Haley donned Tinkerbell costumes, wings, superhero capes and sparkly running skirts, all while managing to bag 3 race wins, capping it with a 2:55 marathon. If youâre able to take on this challenge; count yourself just as dope.
In this weekâs email:
Treadmill Strut: If youâre like us and currently living in a polar vortex, make treadmill running a bit more bearable with this playlist.
Short Shorts for Runners: We found this running short biz on Insta and couldnât NOT pass it along to our readers.
Volcanic Dining: Pizza cooked on a volcano? YES, please.
American Distance Running: Olympic Trials are upon us, and the American distance running contingent is showing up and showing out lately.
đWatch a Cadence-recommended Vid: If you havenât watched That Triathlon Life on YouTube yet; hereâs your reminder that you should. TTL was started by Paula Findlay and Eric Lagerstrom, a pro triathlon power couple. This video follows Eric as he competes in XTERRA Germany, an off-road cycling race.
Strava Run of the Week:
We canât say whatâs the more egregious act here; a 32 mile run on pavement, or the fact that it was done doing a billion .07 mile loops.
Race Results of the Week
Tidbits
Hot Waffles + Running: Itâs hard to believe that Nike was just started in 1964, and now has grown to a world leader in all things athletics ($32.4 billion in 2022). When Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman decided to start a shoe company together, sneakers and tennis shoes were all runners had to rely on for long distance training. Together, they reimagined what the running shoe was, and used a literal waffle iron to do it. Realizing that a shoe tread had to be unique to grab the new (slick) material that tracks were being created with, the Nike Waffle Trainer was born.
â Lava âZa: Weâre confident when we say Pizza Pacaya is the most remote pizza parlor on Earth. To visit this pizza joint, youâve got a 90-minute hike up the Pacaya Volcano in Guatemala. Once you arrive, youâll watch a pizza be cooked in about 14 minutes, using heat from cooling lava. This gourmet experience is one that will beat out any wood-fired pizza place, we promise.
â Economics of Pro Tri: If your guess was that LCB was the top female earner in 2023 - youâd be wrong. Anne Haug and Kristian Blummenfelt (by a long shot) were the top long course earners last year.
â New Year, New PR: Running a half marathon, and eventually a full marathon, is a rite of passage for pretty much every runner (except maybe the sprinters on your high school track team that couldnât run a 400m warm up loop without complaining). Whether itâs bagging your first 13.1, or running your fastest; itâs all about the right training.
â Olympic Marathon Qualifying Standards: USATF is the governing body that decides how fast is fast enough to represent the United States in the Olympic Games in Paris this summer. Placing top 3 (or on the menâs side, top 2), is simply not enough. With having time standards in place, it prevents the entire field from dogging the marathon and forces the utmost competition on the day of the trials.
đBucket List Recs
Big training week behind ya and want to add something to your bucket list? Need something to kick your butt into high gear? Check out our endurance bucket list recs below and sign up for something youâll probably regret when youâre doing a 20 mile training run in August in the Midwest.
Krispy Kreme Challenge: 12 donuts, 5 miles, 1 hour. If glaze donuts and running are your thing, this race is for you. Head to North Carolina and complete this challenge; bonus points if you donât yak.
Alta Via Uno: This 75-mile hike in the Dolomites of Italy is a punchy multi-day backpacking trip. Explore the backcountry of Italy and then treat yourself with allll the pasta + wine.
Kesugi Ridge Trail: If you havenât been to Denali National Park in Alaska, itâs incredibly rugged; in fact, thereâs 0 trails in the entire park. Youâd better be good at mountaineering and using a compass.
Performance Of The Week(end): Weini Kelati with NEW 13.1 American Record, 1:06:25.
